When I came home earlier this week, I found two Black Lab/Mixes on my driveway. As I approached them, they jumped up and came toward the car, tails wagging madly, so glad to see someone, anyone. They were adorable!
I immediately checked for collars and tags, and, fortunately, they had identification, which allowed for them to find their way back home.
But, this incident reminded me of a time when a Chocolate Lab/Mix touched down in our front yard in another town in another decade. It was during the Great Recession when, to my horror, dogs, cats, and even horses, were being dumped.
Without a moment’s hesitation, I ran to protect this stray Lab while I looked to see if it had been separated from its owner during a walk or had just wandered off from home. Immediately, I could see it had no tags, and so I took her (it was a young girl puppy) to the local Humane Society to see if it had a microchip. No such luck.
Long story short, I tried to integrate Josefina, as I named her, into our household, but our older Queen Bee Black Labrador could not tolerate the change, so after a lengthy period of being a dedicated social worker for a dog, I eventually found just the perfect forever home for Miss Josie. Here I am with Miss Josie in her new forever home.
This week’s episode reminded me again that, just as we are our brothers and sisters’ keeper, we are also our fur babies keepers.
